Fargo| City in southeastern North Dakota, USA, across the Red River from Moorhead, Minnesota; seat of Cass County; population (2000) 90,600. The largest city in the state, it is at the heart of navigation on the Red River and a centre for processing and distributing agricultural products and farm machinery, and meatpacking. Chemicals and building materials are also manufactured here. |
| Fargo was founded in 1871 by the Northern Pacific Railway, and named after W G Fargo of Wells, Fargo and Company; it was incorporated in 1875. It is the seat of North Dakota State University (1890) and North Dakota Agricultural College. |
