Fargo

City in southeastern North Dakota, USA, across the Red River from Moorhead, Minnesota; seat of Cass County; population (2000) 90,600. The largest city in the state, it is at the heart of navigation on the Red River and a centre for processing and distributing agricultural products and farm machinery, and meatpacking. Chemicals and building materials are also manufactured here.

Fargo was founded in 1871 by the Northern Pacific Railway, and named after W G Fargo of Wells, Fargo and Company; it was incorporated in 1875. It is the seat of North Dakota State University (1890) and North Dakota Agricultural College.
