Farnese

Italian family, originating in upper Lazio, who held the duchy of Parma 1545–1731. Among the family's most notable members were Alessandro Farnese (1468–1549), who became Pope Paul III in 1534 and granted his duchy to his illegitimate son Pier Luigi (1503–1547); and Elizabeth (1692–1766), niece of the last Farnese duke, who married Philip V of Spain and was a force in European politics of the time.
