Fasch, Johann Friedrich (1688-1758)

German organist and composer; father of Carl Friedrich Fasch. He founded the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig, travelled after 1714, held various posts in Gera, Greitz, and in the service of Count Morzin in Lukaveč, Bohemia, and in 1722 was appointed Kapellmeister at Zerbst. He was famous as a composer in his day, though his works were not published until after his death.

He was a pupil of Johann Kuhnau at St Thomas's School, Leipzig.

Works

four operas including Die getreue Dido (1712); Masses, a Requiem, church cantatas, motets, a Passion; about 90 orchestral suites, 60 concertos, trios, sonatas, and other pieces; many of his vocal pieces are now lost.
