Fastnachtspiel

Carnival play that emerged in the 15th century as Germany's first truly secular form of drama, surviving until the end of the 16th century. It combined popular farce and elements from religious drama and was usually performed by amateurs.

Hans Sachs was the leading writer of Fastnachtspiele in the 16th century.
