The favelas of Rio are well known as self-governing communities, randomly assembled and built without permission or in accordance with any building regulations. Samba had no pure tie to the favelas because it developed in a more fluid exchange between the favelas and the working and middle-class, white and mixed race neighborhoods of Rio. They brought dance to favelas (slums), prisons, and Indian tribes. |
