Fayette

Town in Fayette County, northeast Iowa; population (1998 est) 1,300. It is situated on the Volga River, 58 km/36 mi northeast of Waterloo. The claim to be the county seat was lost to West Union.

Fayette is home to Upper Iowa University (1857), the second largest private university in Iowa.

Town and administrative headquarters of Jefferson County, southwest Mississippi; population (1990) 1,900. It is 35 km/22 mi northeast of Natchez, to the east of the Natchez Trace. This cotton and lumber trade centre became the focus of nation scrutiny when civil-rights leader Charles Evers became mayor in 1969.

Town and administrative headquarters of Howard County, north-central Missouri; population (1990) 2,900. It is located 37 km/23 mi northwest of Columbia. Founded in 1823, it is a trade hub in an agricultural region. It is home to Central Methodist College (1854).

Town in Seneca County, west-central New York; population (1990) 3,600. It is situated in the Finger Lakes, near Cayuga Lake, and 24 km/15 mi southwest of Auburn. It is a rural town in a vineyard region. Religious leader Joseph Smith established the first Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) here in 1830. The Seneca Army Depot is to the south.
