Fayette County

County in central Kentucky; area 738 sq km/285 sq mi; population (1990) 225,400. Its administrative headquarters is Lexington. Its southern boundary is the Kentucky River, and several creeks, including Elkhorn Creek and its north branch, flow through the county. It is situated in the heart of the ‘Bluegrass Region’, where agricultural industry is centred on cattle- and sheep-raising, tobacco, bluegrass seed, and grain. The county is famous for its thoroughbred race and saddle horse farms. There are limestone quarries, and manufacturing at Lexington.

County in southwest Pennsylvania; area 2,056 sq km/794 sq mi; population (1990) 145,400. It is bordered by the Monongahela River to the west and West Virginia and Maryland to the south. Its administrative headquarters is Uniontown. The northern part of the county touches on Pittsburgh's southern suburbs. There is coal mining and dairying here, with manufacturing at Uniontown.
