Annunciation

In the New Testament, the announcement to Mary by the archangel Gabriel that she was to be the mother of Christ; the feast of the Annunciation is 25 March (also known as Lady Day).

In painting, Mary is usually shown interrupted while reading. A white dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit, hovers above. White lilies, representing her purity, stand in a vase or are carried by the archangel.
