Federal Way

Town in King County, west-central Washington; population (1990) 67,600. It is a large residential suburb, 32 km/20 mi south of Seattle and to the northeast of Tacoma. It has grown rapidly as newly constructed homes have replaced many of the trees on its wooded ridges during the 1990s. The corporate headquarters of Weyerhaeuser and of several other companies are here, and there are numerous shopping malls.

The town was named after the Federal highway built in this area in 1929. Federal Way is known for its Rhododendron Species Foundation Garden and its two amusement parks.
