Federer, Roger (1981– )

Swiss tennis player. In 2004 he became the first man since Mats Wilander in 1988 to win three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. He repeated the feat in 2006. In 2007 he won his fifth straight Wimbledon title.

He turned professional in 1998, having ended the year as the top-ranked junior in the world, and the following year became the youngest player to finish in the world's top 100 players. He won his first major title at Wimbledon in 2003 and became the world number one for the first time in February 2004. At the end of that year he successfully defended his Tennis Masters Cup title. Having already won each of the other three Grand Slam titles, he reached the final of the French Open in 2006, 2007, and 2008 but lost each time to Rafael Nadal.

His 6–0, 7–6, 6–0 win over Lleyton Hewitt in the final of the 2004 US Open was the tournament's most one-sided final since 1884.
