Fedra

Opera by Ildebrando Pizzetti (libretto based on Gabriele d'Annunzio's tragedy), first produced at La Scala, Milan, Italy, on 20 March 1915. Phaedra, the wife of Theseus, loves her stepson, Hippolytus, who rejects her. She makes Theseus believe Hippolytus has raped her, and Hippolytus is then killed. Phaedra takes poison, but unlike the version in Greek myth, she remains defiant to the end.
