Fehling's test

Chemical test to determine whether an organic substance is a reducing agent (substance that donates electrons to other substances in a chemical reaction). It is used to detect reducing sugars (monosaccharides, such as glucose, and the disaccharides maltose and lactose) and aldehydes.

If the test substance is heated with a freshly prepared solution containing copper(II) sulphate, sodium hydroxide and sodium potassium tartrate, the production of a brick-red precipitate indicates the presence of a reducing agent.

The test was devised by German chemist Herman von Fehling.
