Fehmarn

German island in the Baltic Sea, belonging to the Land (administrative region) of Schleswig-Holstein and covering an area of 185 sq km/71 sq mi; population (1991) 11,800. Fehmarn is separated from the Danish island of Laaland by the Fehmarn Belt. It has mostly grazing land and farmland growing wheat, barley, and rape. The sandy beaches are a holiday destination. The principal town is Burg.

Its growth as a resort was promoted by the construction of a bridge over the Fehmarnsund linking the island to the German mainland in 1963. The ferry port at Puttgarden is an important junction.

Between 1912 and 1914, Fehmarn was a popular summer location for the German expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
