Fen He

River in Shanxi province, China; length 716 km/445 mi. It flows in a southwesterly direction, and is a tributary of the Huang He. The Fen He drains one-quarter of the total area of Shanxi, and is vital in irrigating the province. Considerable afforestation and terracing have been carried out along its banks to combat soil erosion.
