Ferguson, Alex(ander) (1941– )

Scottish football manager. One of British football's most successful managers, he has won more than 20 domestic and European trophies with Manchester United since 1986. In 1999 Manchester United became the first club to achieve the league championship and FA Cup double three times. The club also won the European Cup the same year, thus achieving a unique treble in English football. As manager of Aberdeen from 1978 to 1986, he won ten trophies including three Scottish championships and the European Cup Winners' Cup. He was manager of the Scottish national side 1985–86.

He was capped by Scotland at schoolboy and youth level and played for Queen's Park, St Johnstone, Dunfermline, and Glasgow Rangers, where he scored 35 goals in 67 games, before embarking on a coaching career as player-coach of Falkirk. He enjoyed his first success as a manager with St Mirren 1974–78, taking the club from the Scottish second division to the Premier Division. He was knighted in 1999, and his autobiography, Managing My Life, was published in August 2000.
