Ferguson, Howard (1908–1999)

Irish composer and pianist. Ferguson was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London, 1948–63. He made many editions of early keyboard works, and was active as an accompanist.

Ferguson was educated at Westminster School and the Royal College of Music in London as a pupil of Reginald Morris.

Works

Ballet

Chaunteclear (1948).

Orchestral

partita and four Diversions on Ulster Airs for orchestra; concerto for piano and strings (1951).

Chamber

Octet (1933); two violin and piano sonatas, four pieces for clarinet and piano; sonata and five bagatelles for piano.

Vocal

two ballads for baritone and orchestra; three Medieval Carols for voice and piano (1932–33); The Dream of the Rood for soprano or tenor, chorus, and orchestra (1958–59).
