Fergusson, James (1808-1886)

Scottish architectural historian, born in Ayr, who compiled the first general history of architecture. His interest in architecture began while travelling through India as a merchant. His Handbook of Architecture appeared in 1845, was expanded into History of Architecture in 1867, and was followed by Indian and Eastern Architecture in 1876.

His books earned him the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Royal Gold Medal in 1876.
