Fermoy

Market town in County Cork, Republic of Ireland, 32 km/20 mi from the city of Cork; population (2002) 2,300. Situated on the River Blackwater, Fermoy is also a centre for salmon and coarse fishing. Dairy products and electrical goods are manufactured, and there is a small chemical industry. Fermoy was originally built in 1791 to serve a British garrison.

The extensive British military barracks on the north bank of the river was destroyed during the War of Independence in 1921; the grounds and remaining buildings have been taken over for industry. There are large flour mills at Clondulane, 5 km/3 mi from the town. Prominent buildings include the Roman Catholic church and college (St Colman's).
