Fernandina Beach

Fernandina Beach

Town and administrative headquarters of Nassau County, extreme northeast Florida; population (2000) 10,600. It is situated on Amelia Island, at the mouth of the St Marys River, 32 km/20 mi north of Jacksonville. Settled by the Spanish in the 1680s, and a haven for pirates and smugglers in the early 19th century, it later developed shrimp fishing and packing and wood pulp industries. An late-19th-century beach resort, it has many Victorian buildings.
