Fernow, Bernhard Eduard

Fernow, Bernhard Eduard (1851-1923)

German-born US forester and educator. He helped found the American Forestry Congress, became chief of the new Division of Forestry in the Department of Agriculture, and established the New York State College of Forestry at Cornell University, the first of its kind in the USA.

He was born in Inowrazlaw, Germany (now Poland). Following the establishment of the New York State College of Forestry at Cornell University, he organized forestry schools at Pennsylvania State College and at the University of Toronto, Canada. He also founded the journal Forestry Quarterly (later, Journal of Forestry) and was its editor until 1922.
