Ferns

Village in County Wexford, Republic of Ireland, 13 km/8 mi northeast of Enniscorthy; population (2002) 1,200. A monastery was founded here in the 6th century by St Maodhog (or Mogue), and this was one of the main dioceses of Leinster until the early 15th century. Ferns was also the capital of Leinster in the 12th century; Ferns Castle remains from this period.

Ferns Castle, a particularly fine rectangular keep with a 13th-century circular chapel in the southeast tower, is reputed to be on the site of the former stronghold of Dermot MacMurrough, King of Leinster. The ruins of a 12th-century abbey founded by Dermot MacMurrough can also be seen at Ferns.

On the outskirts of Ferns are the ruins of the 16th-century St Peter's church. The village of Boolavogue is 8 km/5 mi southeast; the Catholic chapel here was burnt and its destruction led to the 1798 Wexford rebellion.

And then, all of a sudden, a little way up the ferny grassy hillside, I caught sight of the end of a book half hidden among the ferns.
