El Ferrol

City and port in La Coruña province in Galicia, on the northwest coast of Spain; population (2001) 78,000. It is a naval base and has a deep, sheltered harbour. There are fisheries, and shipbuilding and engineering industries. It is the birthplace of the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco.
