Opera by Vincent d'Indy (libretto by the composer, based on and altered from Elaias Tegnér's Axel), first produced at the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels, Belgium, on 12 March 1897. In the story, Fervaal can save his people only if he renounces love, but he falls for Guilhen. Defeated by the Saracens, he carries Guilhen's body away, pledging a new age of Christianity.
