Festinger, Leon

Festinger, Leon (1919–1989)

US social psychologist. He taught at various universities before going to the New School for Social Research. His major work was A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance (1957).

He was born in New York City. His theory of cognitive dissonance postulates that people are unable to tolerate conflicting thoughts and beliefs over time and must resolve such conflicts by rejecting or devaluing one or more of the cognitions.
