Fethard

Market town in County Tipperary, Republic of Ireland, 13 km/8 mi north of Clonmel; population (2002) 862. The town dates from Anglo-Norman times and there are considerable remains of the the 14th-century town walls and of three 15th-century rectangular keeps, one of which, Fethard Castle, is located in the centre of the town.

The remains of a 14th-century Augustinian priory can also be seen beyond the town walls at the east end of Fethard. The restored and inhabited Kilkinane Castle, reputedly built by King John (ruled 1199–1216), is 5 km/3 mi southwest on a rocky overhang on the Glashawley River. Slievenamon Mountain (722 m/2,368 ft) is to the south of Fethard. The district has a number of ring forts.
