Feuermann, Emanuel (1902-1942)

Austrian-born US cellist. He made his first appearance in Vienna, in 1912, and later travelled and studied with Julius Klengel at Leipzig. He became a professor at the Cologne Conservatory at the age of 16, and was a professor in Berlin 1929-33, in succession to Hugo Becker. He was driven to the USA by the Nazi régime, and taught at the Curtis Institute from 1941. He played in trios with Huberman and Schnabel, and gave other recitals with Heifetz and Rubinstein. Among his best recordings are Don Quixote, the Dvořák concerto, the Brahms double concerto (with Heifetz) and Schubert's B flat piano trio.
