Fianarantsoa

Principal town in the Fianarantsoa province, south-central Madagascar, on the main north-south road to Antananarivo (416 km/258 mi to the north); population (1993) 99,000. It is the heart of the country's wine-producing region. Rice is also grown, and cattle are raised in the area. Fianarantsoa is linked to the port of Manakara by railway.
