Fichtelgebirge

Chain of mountains in Bavaria, Germany, on the border with the Czech Republic. The highest peaks are the Schneeberg (1,051 m/3,448 ft) and the Ochsenkopf (1,016 m/3,333 ft). There are granite quarries, uranium mining, china and glass industries, and forestry.

The Fichtelgebirge forms the nucleus of three mountain ranges, the Erzgebirge, Frankenwald, and Forest of Bohemia. The geological formation is chiefly granite, slate, gneiss, and basalt; the minerals obtained are iron, sulphur, lead, and copper. Marble and stone are quarried. There are extensive tracts of forest.
