Fichtelgebirge

Chain of mountains in Bavaria, Germany, on the border with the Czech Republic. The highest peaks are the Schneeberg (1,051 m/3,448 ft) and the Ochsenkopf (1,016 m/3,333 ft). There are granite quarries, uranium mining, china and glass industries, and forestry.

The Fichtelgebirge forms the nucleus of three mountain ranges, the Erzgebirge, Frankenwald, and Forest of Bohemia. The geological formation is chiefly granite, slate, gneiss, and basalt; the minerals obtained are iron, sulphur, lead, and copper. Marble and stone are quarried. There are extensive tracts of forest.

Imagine Schulze's shock, then, when he learned last year that much of the nitrate raining down on the upper forested slopes in Germany's Fichtelgebirge -- a range of mountains within 25 miles of the Czech border -- is not taken up by trees or nitrogen-hungry microbes in the soil.
Though Fichtelgebirge is hardly a household name, its devastation warns of a problem facing timberlands throughout the industrial world.
