Field, Helen (1951– )

Welsh soprano. She has appeared with the Welsh National Opera since 1977 as Musetta, Poppea, Mimi, and Tatyana. She was much applauded as Janáček's Vixen and Jenůfa. She sang Desdemona in 1986, and Mussorgsky's Emma at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1982, and appeared with the English National Opera Ensemble at the New York Metropolitan Opera House as Gilda. Other roles include Pamina, Marenka, Marguerite, and Tippett's Jenifer. In 1987 she sang the title role in first British production of Strauss's Daphne. She sang Jo-Ann in the first performance of Tippett's New Year at Houston in 1989, and repeated the role at Glyndebourne in 1990. She created Pearl in Birtwistle's The Second Mrs Kong for the Glyndebourne Touring Opera at Glyndebourne in 1994.
