Fields, Dorothy

Fields, Dorothy (1905–1974)

US lyricist. She worked with composer Jimmy McHugh on ‘I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby’ and ‘On the Sunny Side of the Street’. After a spell in Hollywood, she returned to Broadway where she collaborated with Cole Porter, Arthur Schwartz, and Cy Coleman.

Born in Allenhurst, New Jersey, the daughter of Broadway comedian and producer Lew Fields, she taught dramatic arts and published poetry before becoming a lyricist. On her return to Broadway where she wrote many lyrics, including Sweet Charity, (1966) and librettos, including Annie Get your Gun (1946).
