Fierrabras

Opera by Franz Schubert (libretto by Kupelwieser, after Calderón, taken from A W von Schlegel's Spanisches Theater), composed in 1823, but not performed during Schubert's lifetime; it was first produced in Karlsruhe, Germany, on 9 February 1897. In the story, the French knight Roland loves the Moorish princess Florinda; her brother Fierrabras loves Charlemagne's daughter Emma, who in turn loves Eginhard. The Moorish leader Boland imprisons Roland and other knights, but Charlemagne arrives victorious to save the day.
