Fiesole

Resort town in Tuscany, Italy, 6 km/4 mi northeast of Florence; population (1990) 15,300. It has many Etruscan and Roman relics. The Romanesque cathedral was built in 1028.

Fiesole was an important city under the Etruscans and the Romans; from 63 to 62 BC it was the headquarters of the Roman politician and conspirator Catiline. In the Middle Ages the city was eclipsed by the rise of Florence. It has immense walls and a well-preserved Roman theatre; other antiquities include Roman baths, and Etruscan and Roman tombs and sculptures.
