Filchner, Wilhelm (1877-1957)

German explorer who travelled extensively in Central Asia, but is remembered for his expedition into the Weddell Sea of Antarctica 1911, where his ship became ice-bound for a whole winter. He landed a party and built a hut on the floating ice shelf, which eventually broke up and floated northwards.

Filchner also conducted cartographic surveys and magnetic observations in Tibet 1926-28 and made a magnetic survey of Nepal 1939-40.
