pyramid scheme

Scheme in which each person who joins the scheme has to recruit a certain number of people to the scheme in order to make money. Each person pays a fee to the instigator of the scheme to join, and receives a fee for introducing new members. The longer the scheme goes on the harder it is for existing members to recruit new members. As a result the people at the bottom of the pyramid usually lose money. It is illegal in many countries.
