Fine, Irving (1914–1962)

US composer. His music reflected two of the major trends of the 20th century – neoclassicism and atonality.

He studied at Harvard with Walter Piston and in Paris, France, with Nadia Boulanger. He went on to teach at Harvard 1939–50 and Brandeis University 1950–62.

Works

Orchestral

Toccata concertante (1948), Blue Towers for orchestra (1959), Diversions for orchestra (1958), Symphony (1962).

Chamber

Partita for wind quintet; string quartet (1952).

Vocal

Alice in Wonderland, suite for chorus and orchestra (1949), Mutability, six songs for mezzo and piano (1952), Serious Song (1955).
