Fingal's Cave

Cave on the island of Staffa, Inner Hebrides, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is lined with volcanic basalt columns, and is 70 m/230 ft long and 20 m/65 ft high. Visited by the German Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn in 1829, the cave was the inspiration of his Hebridean overture, otherwise known as Fingal's Cave.

Fingal's Cave

Concert overture by Felix Mendelssohn, Op. 26, composed in recollection of an 1829 visit to the Scottish Hebrides, in Rome, Italy, in December 1830; the revised version was completed in London, England, in the summer of 1832. (The first score was entitled Die einsame Insel/The Lonely Island).
