fingerboard

In string instruments, the upper surface and continuation of the neck, against which the fingers press the strings to alter their length and therefore their pitch.

Violins have smooth fingerboards, allowing the player scope to alter the pitch continuously; other instruments, such as the guitar and lute, have frets attached or inlaid to regulate intonation.
