Fink, Albert (1827-1897)

German-born US engineer, statistician, and economist. He invented the Fink truss bridge, which became widely used on US railways. His ability with statistics and record-keeping resulted in the important ‘Fink Report on Cost of Transportation’ (1874), which helped stabilize the transportation industry.

He was born in Lauterbach, Germany. He was working as a structural engineer for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, when he invented the Fink truss bridge. He then worked for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, where he rose to be vice-president, and he inaugurated the application of economics to railroads for the future.
