Finney, Ross Lee

Finney, Ross Lee (1906-1997)

US composer. His compositions have attempted a reconciliation between tonal and serial music.

He was educated at Carleton College, Minnesota, and studied music at Minnesota University and later in Paris, France, and Vienna, Austria, with Nadia Boulanger and Alban Berg; he also studied with Roger Sessions at Harvard University.

Works

Orchestral

Overture to a Social Drama for orchestra; four symphonies (1942-72); piano concerto, violin concerto.

Chamber

eight string quartets (1935-60), piano trio, violin and piano sonata, four piano sonatas.

Vocal

John Brown for tenor, male chorus, and chamber orchestra; eight Poems for soprano, tenor, and piano.
