Fire Island

Barrier island in Suffolk County, southeastern New York State, between Great South Bay (to the north) and the Atlantic Ocean. Fire Island is 48 km/30 mi long and up to 1 km/0.5 mi wide; it is a popular summer holiday destination that caters for a number of different clienteles.

Among the resorts on Fire Island are Kismet, Saltaire, Fair Harbor, Dunewood, Atlantique, Ocean Beach, Seaview, Point o' Woods, Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines, and Davis Park. Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines are noted centres of the gay community. At the western end of the island is Robert Moses State Park, which is reached by causeway from West Bay Shore; otherwise, Fire Island is only accessible by ferry. The eastern half of the island consists of protected dunes and beaches, important elements of the Fire Island National Seashore (which covers an area of 80 sq km/31 sq mi , taking in the entire island except for the state park).
