Lyons

English form of Lyon, a city in France.

Lyons

Town in northeastern Illinois, on the Des Plaines River, a residential suburb 16 km/10 mi southwest of the Chicago Loop (the central business district); population (1990 est) 9,800.

Sometimes called the ‘Gateway to the West’, Lyons is the site of the Chicago portage used by American Indians and French explorers travelling between the Great Lakes and the Des Plaines River, which joins the Illinois River and ultimately flows into the Mississippi River.

Lyons

City and administrative headquarters of Rice County, central Kansas, 42 km/26 mi northwest of Hutchinson; population (1990 est) 3,700. Salt mining and processing began here in 1890, and remain important. Wheat also contributes to the city's economy.

Lyons

Town and administrative headquarters of Wayne County, western New York State, on the Erie Canal, 24 km/15 mi south of Lake Ontario and 52 km/32 mi southeast of Rochester; population (1990 est) 6,300. In a region filled with orchards, Lyons is a canning centre; other industries produce machinery, fertilizer, and chemicals. Summer tourism is also important.

It was settled in 1800.
