First World

Former term for the industrialized capitalist, or free-market, countries of the West. It was used during the Cold War, along with the classifications Second World (industrialized communist countries) and Third World (non-aligned, developing countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America). The terms originally denoted political alignment, but later took on economic connotations that are now considered derogatory.
