Fischer, Ivan (1951– )

Hungarian conductor, brother of Adam Fischer. He studied in Budapest and with Hans Swarowsky, and conducted in Italy from 1975 and as a guest conductor with the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1976. He made his opera debut in Zurich in 1977, gave Agrippina with Kent Opera in 1982 and was musical director there 1984–89. He led La Clemenza di Tito/The Clemency of Titus with the Royal Opera at Manchester in 1983, and was musical director of the Northern Sinfonia 1979–82. In 1983 he took the London Symphony Orchestra to the Far East and was guest conductor with the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra. He conducted Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute for the English National Opera Ensemble in 1987, and Don Giovanni in Vienna in 1988.
