Fisher, Clarence Stanley

Fisher, Clarence Stanley (1876–1941)

US archaeologist. He directed Middle East digs and taught at the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem. Best known for his Palestinian excavations, he published important reports on Nippur (1905–6), Samaria (1924), and Armageddon (1929).

He was born in Philadelphia and trained as an architect before turning to archaeology. He is noted for his pioneering precision in the surveying and mapping of sites, the drafting of plans of all structures, and the recording of locations of all recovered objects.
