Fisher, Sylvia (1910–1996)

Australian soprano. She sang in Melbourne from 1932 and appeared as Leonore at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1949; she returned until 1958 as Sieglinde, Gutrune, the Marschallin, and the Kostelnička in the British first performance of Jenůfa (in 1956). She sang Britten roles with the English Opera Group 1963–71, and premiered Mrs Wingrave on BBC television in 1971. The title part in Gloriana was one of her best roles.
