Fisk, James (1835–1872)

US capitalist. He was involved in several shady business deals, including a run-in with the industrialist Cornelius Vanderbilt over the purchase of the Erie Railroad Company, and an attempt to corner the gold market that resulted in the Black Friday panic of 1869.

He was born in Bennington, Vermont. He opened Fisk & Belden, a brokerage house, with the financial support of the businessman Daniel Drew. In the so-called ‘Erie War’ between Drew and Cornelius Vanderbilt, Fisk stymied Vanderbilt's attempt to purchase Erie Railroad Company stock and with Jay Gould took over and looted the company. Known as the ‘Barnum of Wall Street’ for his fraudulent business practices and notorious for his opulent lifestyle, he died after being shot during a dispute over business matters and a mistress.
