Fitelberg, Jerzy (1903–1951)

Polish-born US composer. He played percussion in his father's orchestra as a boy and studied composition at the Warsaw Conservatory and under Franz Schreker in Berlin, Germany. He settled in Paris, France, in 1933 and in New York, USA, in 1940. His fourth string quartet (1937) received an Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge award.

Works

Orchestral

Concert Pieces, Sinfonietta (1946), Polish Pictures, Nocturne, and two suites for orchestra, symphony for strings, piano, harp and percussion, concerto for strings; two piano concertos (1929, 1934), two violin concertos, cello concerto.

Chamber

five string quartets (1926–45), string trio, woodwind quintet; suite for violin and piano, sonatina for two violins, duo for violin and cello, sonata for cello solo; piano sonata and pieces.
