Fittipaldi, Emerson (1946– )Brazilian racing driver. He won the Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship in 1972 and 1974. He raced Indy Cars from 1984, winning the overall CART title in 1989, and the Indianapolis 500 in 1989 and 1993. He made his Formula 1 debut for Lotus in 1970, winning the US Grand Prix. In 1972, at the age of 25, he became the youngest driver, and the first Brazilian, to win the world championship. He won it again two years later, this time in a MacLaren. From 1976 to 1980 he raced for his brother's team but with little success. In 1984 he joined the US Indy Car circuit, driving first for Pat Patrick and then for Penske. In 1989, at the age of 44, he won both the Indianapolis 500 and the overall CART title. He announced his retirement as a motor racing driver after sustaining serious injuries in a plane crash in 1997. How to thank TFD for its existence?
