Fitzgerald, Barry

    0.12 sec.

Fitzgerald, Barry (1888–1961)

Irish stage and screen actor. He first won acclaim for his roles in the dramas of Sean O'Casey, appearing in The Plough and the Stars and Juno and the Paycock. He moved to Hollywood in 1937 and appeared in over 40 films, notably The Long Voyage Home (1940), Going My Way (1944), And Then There Were None (1945), and Naked City (1948).

Born in Dublin and educated there at Merchant Taylor's School, Fitzgerald joined the Irish Civil Service in 1911 and took up amateur acting, playing in the Abbey Theatre out of office hours (1916–29) under a stage name, as Civil Service regulations required. After becoming a full-time actor, he toured and then settled for over 20 years in the USA. Fitzgerald returned to Ireland to appear in John Ford's The Quiet Man (1952), and Happy Ever After (1954), and moved back permanently in 1959.
